The UK Atomic Energy Authority have an excellent opportunity for a research software engineer to join the Software Engineering Group in the CODAS & IT department. The group consists of 10 software engineers, the majority of whom are RSEs responsible for data systems and tools for the JET experiment.
The existing RSEs undertake occasional project work on software for other groups but this post is the first to be dedicated entirely to RSE project work. You would work closely with the group leader to deliver the projects and activities and expand the team if demand requires it.
Projects will be varied and might involve adapting leading fast-particle physics code to make efficient use of HPC (GPU) systems, working with neutronics experts and industrial partners to enable multi-physics analysis on exascale prototype platforms and developing interfaces between a novel engineering simulation framework and control systems in preparation for a future demonstration fusion power plant (DEMO).
Key accountabilities/responsibilities include
– Define and deliver research software development projects
– Diagnose issues and design solutions considering full technical and human context
– Build relationships with research groups to understand their needs and define future RSE projects and services
– Provide scientific computing and software advice to researchers
– Lead training and community initiatives to improve software development approaches
– Help represent the RSE projects team in relevant research and RSE communities
The UKAEA hosts and manages the JET nuclear fusion energy experiment on behalf of the EU and is also home to the UK`s MAST-U fusion energy experiment. UKAEA also works with industry and other third parties to develop new technologies currently in Remote Handling and Materials research. Following recent UK funding two new centres of excellence in tritium fuel handling and component testing and validation are being built.
