Senior Research Officer in Open Science

The Scientific Computing Department (SCD) has a programme of work to support Open Science using information technology tools, methods and services, as well as advocacy and training. This includes managing and publishing research data and research publications and other related research artefacts, guided by the FAIR data principles. The programme has the ultimate aim of assisting the users of STFC’s facilities and programmes to maximize the value and impact of their research through the use and reuse of research data.

SCD is working within European programmes to further this aim, and has recently begun a new 3-year project, FAIRsFAIR. FAIRsFAIR is supporting researchers across disciplines to define, develop and promote the uptake of data best practices guided by the FAIR data principles, developing how they can be best adopted, exploited and evaluated within different communities, within a FAIR data competence centre. This project is part of the wider cross-European effort to establish a European Open Science Cloud as a common platform for data sharing and reuse across research communities.

You will work closely with user communities inside and outside STFC to determine use cases and develop best practice guidelines for FAIR data within and across different research disciplines, including contributing to training activities. You will undertake research and development into methods, practices and tools to support FAIR data. This would include data policy, data management plans, metadata, data repositories, data management, preservation and publication, persistent identifiers, data provenance and data semantics. You will also work on capturing requirements, designing, and deploying appropriate software tools to support the cataloguing and dissemination of information on management, publication of and access to research data.

You will be a part of the FAIRsFAIR team at STFC, and will have a significant level of autonomy and responsibility. You will be responsible for consulting widely across research communities, making sound technological decisions, for leadership of particular tasks within the project, including leading on writing up and presenting the work in a clear fashion intended for a wide audience. Working in a cross-instittional collaborative project environment is necessary, including contributing to project deliverables, presenting at meetings or elsewhere, attending coordination calls, writing documentation, and participating in dissemination activities.

Regular national and international travel is required to work with project partners and user communities at project meetings and events.

The post is based at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire.

List of Duties/Work Programme/Responsibilities:

  • working with STFC’s FAIRsFAIR team and collaborators from project partner organisations
  • taking a lead role on coordinating cross-institutional teams on specific tasks in the FAIRsFAIR project
  • consulting with research communities within and without STFC to capture best practices for FAIR data management
  • working with user scientists within and without STFC on developing and disseminating use cases of FAIR data management
  • contributing to the development of training material on the application of the FAIR data guidelines
  • contributing to software tools development including potentially: requirements capture, design, implementation, review, testing, and documentation
  • participating in weekly calls and project face to face meetings
  • leading on and contributing to project deliverables
  • representing the project at external meetings and conferences, including presenting project results.
