The Centre for eResearch is a cross-faculty research centre at the University of Auckland. Our mission is to develop new ways to apply computer and information technology to research disciplines, and then help researchers to use them. This mission applies to the entire range of research disciplines across the university, although the support we provide may vary by community.
We seek creative, enthusiastic and talented people to join our eResearch group who enjoy interacting with researchers and working in a very dynamic team environment. You will contribute to and benefit from the team’s broad skill base, and be excited by the opportunity to work across multiple disciplines and likely in a variety of different capacities. Researcher needs are always changing, so the support we offer is constantly evolving to keep track with emerging needs and opportunities.
About the role
As a self-motivated person who shows initiative, for this role, we assume you bring a strong grounding in at least one of: (i) computer science (ii) information systems (iii) IT practice in support of research, along with a set of skills in scripting/programming and general expertise in areas such as: dev-ops of computational and data systems, solutions architecture, design and development in an agile environment, data workflows/repositories, analytics, training and research support.
Primarily, you will engage closely with researchers and IT service providers across the university to design and build research data infrastructure, providing tailored solutions to enable Researchers to focus on their research questions (in areas such as: microscopy, microanalysis, digital humanities, particle physics, next-gen sequencing and medical imaging) freeing them from unnecessary technical details of the underlying systems.
If you’re interested in contributing to the future of research data infrastructure at the University of Auckland, this position should be of interest to you. We are a multidisciplinary team, therefore we are looking for talented people with complementary expertise.
You will also develop key functional relationships with colleagues within the Centre for eResearch working on visualisation, machine learning and data analysis, and with the University’s larger Information Technology and Library and Learning Services, as we work together to positively transform access to a comprehensive set of sustainable services to plan, manage, analyse, archive, share, and publish data outputs across the research data lifecycle with adherence to FAIR data principles. From time to time you may also deliver educational workshops to help researchers learn new digital skills (we teach Software and Data Carpentry).
In line with constantly evolving and emerging research needs and opportunities, we need the people who work with us to be very flexible, possess multiple computational skills and be willing and able to learn new skills and computational environments rapidly. You will be familiar with working in an open collaborative environment, and have demonstrated competence to communicate and work effectively with different teams to help steer work and take ownership to deliver results. You will also have demonstrated passion for research and helping to make it better.
