The UCL Research Software Development Group works with researchers across the university to ensure UCL retains the highest standards of excellence in computational research. We are recruiting an additional member of the group. Our research software developers design, extend, refactor, and maintain scientific software across all subject areas. We modify legacy software to run on state-of-the-art high performance computing infrastructure, provide expert software engineering consulting services to world-leading research teams, and work with scientists and scholars to build software to meet new research challenges.
Our research programming roles are a great opportunity to develop new programming skills. As generalist research programmers, we need to spend a lot of time learning new things, and we don’t expect our candidates to know it all from the start. The role includes time to study the research areas with which we work, and the specialist technologies applied in research IT.
The team is friendly and diverse, with a range of backgrounds and skill sets represented. There are good opportunities for personal development and career progression within the group, in both technical and managerial tracks. Funding for training and conference travel is also readily available.
This post is on an open-ended contract. We are committed to flexible working to support a healthy work-life balance, and can consider both informal and formal arrangements, including the possibility of a part-time appointment.
We are looking for candidates who have created and maintained software to address advanced research problems in at least one field, but more importantly, who have a flexible approach to building an understanding of new scientific questions, and who can see how to translate research needs to IT requirements.
We are deeply committed to software development best practices, and are working to adapt these to research contexts. We’re looking for candidates who share our enthusiasm for reproducible, reliable computational research, and who can help to spread that to our research community.
