About the role:
This role contributes to the development of a data system integrating the surface marine climate record into the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) through its Climate Data Store (CDS – https://climate.copernicus.eu/climate-data-store). NOC, in partnership with an international team led by the National University of Ireland, Maynooth (NUIM), will be providing access to marine and terrestrial meteorological observation from national and international climate archives through the CDS.
We seek a Programmer/Analyst to join our team in NOC to develop and implement methods and software for the analysis and quality assurance of marine climate observations. The analysis will include screening of observations of essential climate variables for anomalous values, diagnosing and fixing the cause where possible; implementing and modifying algorithms for spatially tracking ships of opportunity and imputing missing quality and metadata flags based on the data. More information on the type of data can be found on the ICOADS website (http://icoads.noaa.gov). You will be responsible for the delivery of data analysis methods, software and documentation for a system designed to provide quality assured climate observations to users. These will include climate services, academia and the public. The role encompasses phases of planning, analysis, design and implementation to ensure that the information required to use and interpret climate data is integrated and discoverable with the observations themselves. This will require an innovative approach to the challenges of characterising and interpreting the marine climate record that will be published in peer-reviewed publications.
This is a Fixed Term Appointment, available for three years (up to 26 February 2021) offered on NERC terms and conditions and is open to internal and external candidates.
This is a full time Band 6 position and the starting salary will be in the range £28,200 – £32,130 per annum.
You will be familiar with a range of programming languages (e.g. Fortran, C, Python, R) and be able to show that you can use those languages to analyse, visualise and manipulate large or complex datasets. You will be able to demonstrate an aptitude for problem-solving, drawing in ideas from across disciplines to understand the complexity of the marine climate record. You will be able to design and implement methods to identify observations likely to be duplicates, to quality control observations and to integrate information describing data quality from a wide range of sources. You will have good verbal and written communication skills, be able to work independently and within an international team.
